Okay, I don't get it. Where did the hole come from? Do you have to be good at math to get it, because I'm not. :)

This is just an Illusion as far as i concerned.

I figured it out!

Clue 1. The individual shapes on top ARE the SAME as the respective shapes on the bottom.

Clue 2. The grids are uniform, not bent.

Clue 3. Calculate the slope of each triangle. This should give it away.

impossible...great blog.

The illusion come from the lines!!
they are way too thick.

Try to redraw these with a fine pencil (compared to grid scale), and superpose them. you'll see the solution coming from the triangle slopes.

the upper picture has more blocks than the lower picture

Look at the hypotenuse of the first triangle. It is not a st line.

The two triangles in each figure do not have the same slope.
So,the second figure is not an exact replica of da first.......

You just have to realize that it in NOT a big triangle that is made up of smaller shapes. The two small triangles have different slopes. Different by just enough to leave a gap the size of one cube when re-arranged.

Area of triangle = 1/2 base times height... So it appears to be a large one of (1/2)*13*5 = 32.5

But it's really just smaller shapes.
(1/2)*3*8 = 12
(1/2)*2*5 = 5
12+5+7+8 = 32

The extra half comes from the position of the larger triangle with the lesser slope moving to the other side and thus seeming to take more space.
(Try copying into MS-Paint and drawing a straight line along the "Hypotenuse" of the collection of shapes.) You will see, that it is NOT a triangle.

Really good puzzle!!

Its simple, it all boils down to the orange and line green shapes. If you look at the orange piece and where it was placed on the lite green piece in the second picture, you will see where the space came from based on simple mathematics...
